IT Patent Company ISYS Technologies Sues Google Over the Use of “Chromebook”

ISYS Technologies, who is the parent company of the manufacturer of the ChromiumPC desktop Chromium OS machine, has filed suit against Google to block the use of “Chromebook” on their soon to be released lineup of Chrome OS devices. When I first wrote about the ChromiumPC, I did not write favorably about the subsidiary company, Xi3, because of their claim of having the world’s first Chrome OS device. Now it seems their story is much clearer.

ISYS Technologies is a patent trolling company. As in, they hold patents and trademarks for the sole purpose of using legal means to make money. That explains why I found out about the suit through a press release; what other company would sue and then submit a press release about it?

I debated even posting this, but it’s relevant to Google and Chrome OS. It shows that when a company such as Google makes enough money that others are going to try to get their piece of the pie however it is that they can. But seriously, how can ISYS create a device called “ChromiumPC” and run it with Chromium OS, then sue the company that help create it?

What’s even more baffling is what this has to do with Chromebook at all, since Chrome OS and Chromium OS are different projects, even though they share some of the same code. What do you think?

One Response to IT Patent Company ISYS Technologies Sues Google Over the Use of “Chromebook”

What is it with Utah corporations lately? Don’t they know how to manufacture a product? Instead they resort to patent trolling — parasites trying to suck the blood of those who actually innovate. “Chromebook” is not “ChromiumPC” and Isys hasn’t even been granted the ChromiumPC trademark. So how can they sue for something they don’t even own — and probably won’t own because Google has objected to them stealing the Chromium name. Chromium OS is an OS — any PC running Chromium could be called a Chromium PC. I’m fed up with patent trolls. It’s time to cut them off at the knees.
