There is a lot happening around Chrome OS these days. I see new devices popping up with all kinds of processors and configurations. Here are some bits and pieces that I found with the help of Pedram Jabbari. I will put all of them here and lets try to make something out of it . Comment form is open for you. Lets go to them one by one.
A New Device”Nitrous” With “DRM”
There are many devices showing up in the Chromium code base these days. I spotted a new one today “Nitrous“. It shows up along with”amd64-drm” . There is a lot of working going on around DRM based Chrome OS or DRM based Chromebook. This Gigaom article tells me about Intel’s plans about bringing Digital Rights Management on to the processor level.
This will give copyright owners of TV shows and Movies more confidence to follow the streaming and digital channels of distribution. And we all know that Google is really interested in this business too. (Well, is there anything that they are not interested in?)
CRAS For Chrome OS
We initially knew about CRAS as the new audio driver for Chrome OS, replacing ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ) when François Beaufort talked about it few days back. This is what he found “Instead of talking to ALSA in dB we talk to the new audio server (CRAS) in percent” Now, here is we found.
“New overlay for development of drm-based build.”
nual build and run, modify /sbin/session_manager_setup.sh to
pass use-cras to chrome, play youtube”
François was wondering if CRAS was created only for replacing the open-sourced ALSA. Now we think it could be more than that. Google might be planning for a video or say, digital content distribution based on Chrome OS and Chromebooks, with DRM built deep in to processor architecture level.
But yes, these are all guesses for now. We definitely need more clues to get a clear picture out of all this, but this of course is a good starting point. We can dig more deeper, discuss and find newer things.
What do you think?
